Severe sepsis and septic shock are common and deadly disease with major public health implication. Sepsis is now the 10th most common cause of death in United Sates. Approximately 7,50,000 patients develop sepsis each year, among which 2,25,000 die. Though the term ‘Sepsis’ persisted for more than 2700 years with essentially unchanged meaning; worldwide accepted definitions of severe sepsis and septic shock have been formulated since early 1990s. So, when sepsis is associated with hypoperfusion or single organ dysfunction, become severe sepsis. When hypoperfusion in severe sepsis persists in spite of adequate fluid resuscitation and requiring vasopressors, it is called septic shock. Massive resources have been invested in developing and evaluating potential therapies and considerable effort has been undertaken to understand the systemic inflammation and multiple-system organ failure characteristics of severe sepsis. So to avoid Sepsis associated complication & mortality, early identification, optimal resuscitation with antimicrobials, fluids & vasopressors as well as source control (when appropriate) are necessary.
