Abstract

In 1995 I, Dr. Mohammad Omar Faruq came to Dhaka, from USA with my family with a long term plan to settle down. It was like a gamble with my professional career as the life in USA was fairly comfortable with high salary and enviable amenities.

I lived in USA for twenty one years as a physician practicing Internal medicine (IM), Emergency Medicine (EM) and Critical Care Medicine (CCM) at different places. During my journey back to Dhaka, I brought back my whole house hold belongings in a shipping container. Also keeping in mind my aspiration to establish modern CPR workshops in Bangladesh I brought with me 2000 US $ worth of CPR training equipment and accessories.

I began my saga in Bangladesh by introducing first ever comprehensive Basic and Advanced CPR (BLS & ACLS) at department of Anesthesiology of IPGMR (now BSMMU) in 1995. I trained different CPR instructors there so they could continue ACLS and BLS workshops on regular basis and they have been doing it till today.

In 1996 I joined ICU BIRDEM hospital after being offered the post of consultant and head of ICU which was under dept. of Anesthesia at that time.In a year I introduced first ever dept. of CCM at ICU in our country and also introduced there the concept of closed ICU for the first time. My designation was changed to Associate Professor of CCM which was also a first time in Bangladesh.

In 2003 I proposed post graduate course MD in CCM to be introduced at BIRDEM to Ministry of Health. After a long wait the course was approved at BIRDEM ICU by Advisor ministry of Health in 2007. So far ninety five CCM physicians have obtained MD CCM qualifications.

In 2009 Bangladesh Society of CCM (BSCCM) was founded under my guidance with cooperation of several physicians including some renowned anesthesiologists.. In 2013 first International conference titled CRITICON BD- 2013 was organized at Dhaka by BSCCM and first issue of Bangladesh Critical Care Journal (BCCJ) saw the light of the day under my guidance at the same year.In 2018 I joined United hospital ICU as Chef Consultant and till now have been continuing as Chief consultant CCM & EM and Hon. Professor at United Medical College.
