Sepsis and myocardial infarction (MI) are serious medical conditions that often lead to high rates of morbidity and mortality, particularly in patients within the intensive care unit (ICU). The management of myocardial infarction in individuals suffering from sepsis poses distinct challenges, largely due to the intricate relationship between systemic inflammation, hemodynamic instability, and myocardial dysfunction. This session aims to delve into the latest evidence-based strategies designed to enhance the treatment and care of septic patients who are also experiencing myocardial infarction.
The presentation will focus on the pathophysiology of myocardial injury in sepsis. It will explore the roles of inflammatory mediators, microvascular dysfunction, and cardiac ischemia. Additionally, strategies for early detection, risk stratification, and distinguishing between sepsis-induced myocardial dysfunction (SIMD) and acute coronary syndromes (ACS) will be discussed.
The session will focus on therapeutic considerations, including balancing antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapies with bleeding risks, optimizing vasopressor and inotropic support, and assessing mechanical circulatory support in refractory cases. It will also address the timing and feasibility of invasive procedures like coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention in critically ill patients.
Attendees will gain practical insights into managing MI in septic ICU patients through case-based discussions and emerging research. This session is crucial for critical care physicians, cardiologists, and healthcare professionals handling complex cardiac and septic cases in the ICU.
